Terminology
Own-account trading
Trading conducted with a firm's own capital, rather than funds belonging to clients or investors.
Systematic trading
An approach in which decisions are generated by predefined, rules-based processes rather than discretionary, case-by-case judgement.
Discretionary trading
An approach in which decisions are made using a trader's judgement and experience within a defined framework, rather than being generated automatically by a fixed set of rules.
Backtesting
Testing a strategy against historical market data to assess how it would have performed, before any capital is committed to it live.
Drawdown
The decline in value from a portfolio's peak to a subsequent low, typically expressed as a percentage — a core measure of downside risk.
Volatility
The degree of variation in an asset's price over time. Higher volatility generally implies greater uncertainty and risk.
Correlation
A measure of how closely the returns of two assets or strategies move together, used to prevent seemingly diversified positions from behaving as one large, concentrated bet.
Concentration limit
A predefined cap on how much of a portfolio can be exposed to a single position, sector, or risk factor.
Slippage
The difference between a trade's expected price and the price at which it actually executes.
Market impact
The effect that executing a trade has on the price of the asset being traded, particularly relevant for larger orders.
Financial promotion
A communication — including a website — that invites or induces engagement in investment activity. Regulated in most jurisdictions regardless of whether a transaction ever results.
Regulated activity
A category of financial services, such as managing investments or giving investment advice, that requires specific licensing from a financial regulator — separate from, and in addition to, a general commercial trade licence.
